Decentralised Management of Segregated Organic Waste

CSE organized a webinarto e-release its report- “Decentralised treatment of segregated organic waste”. Sources from the government, relevant literature and cities were accessed and analysed to prepare the report. Sector specialists like waste management practitioners, officials from the State and Central Government, and researchers on organic waste management were invited asPanelists for the webinar.

The session started with a welcome note by Mr. Atin Biswas, Director- Municipal Solid Waste Management (MSW)unit at CSE. He thanked everyone for the overwhelming participation from all the stakeholders, including academia, industry, civil society, and government agencies. He shared with all the panellists and participants the challenges associated with current organic waste management practices and why adecentralized waste management system can be a solution for efficient and effective resource recovery.

Ms. Shailshree Tewari, Programme officer, CSE, presented the key aspects of the report, which set the context for the panel discussion. 

Key aspects of the report:

  • The scenario of organic waste management in India.
  • Major provisions for Decentralised Management of organic waste under Solid WasteManagement Rules, 2016.
  • Benefits of decentralized waste management and strategies to promote it.
  • Decentralized organic waste treatment technology options practiced at various levels, including the household, neighbourhood, ward, and zone in India.
  • Strategies to assure the value chain to support a long-term compost market. 

The session was followed by presentations and discussion from each of the Panellists: 

  1. Lakshmi Raghupathy- Former, Director, Ministry of Environment & Forests GOI New Delhi and Advisor & consultant for Environment & Waste Management. 
  1. D. G. Nagaraj- Corporation Health officer, Mysuru City Corporation, Karnataka. 
  1. Vani Murthy- Member SWMRT (Solid Waste Management Round Table) Bengaluru, Compost Queen, Urban Farmer, TEDx speaker. 
  1. Saurabh Kumar- Solid Waste Management Expert, JNAC (Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee) & CEO, TowaSo (Towards Solution), Jharkhand.

The discussion was then followed by a targeted round of questions and answers moderated by Mr. Subashish Parida, Program Manager, MSW unit, CSE.In the last session, relevant questions from the participants were directed towards the panellists. 

The Programme Director, MSW Unit, CSE, concluded the webinar with a concluding remark and thanked all the panellists and participants for being a part of the webinar.
