The Fate of the Global Plastic Treaty

The second session of the fifth meeting of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC 5.2), tasked to put together a legally binding global instrument to end plastic pollution, ended on August 15, 2025 in Geneva, Switzerland. After protracted negotiations that had begun almost three years ago, the INC 5.2 was expected to deliver a much-awaited treaty to address the global plastic pollution crisis. But it failed again. All it could deliver after 10 days of intense multilateral engagement is another version of the “chair’s revised text proposal”.

Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) has had a ringside view of the negotiations since they started, and a CSE team of researchers had keenly followed the entire INC process right from its beginning till the recently concluded second session of the fifth meeting in Geneva.

We invite all to an online debriefing with some key global experts to get an insight into what went wrong, the big wins and losses, where the negotiations are heading, and when can we expect the treaty to be delivered. Do join us.
