Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) has been fostering the Global Forum of Cities for Circular Economy (GFCCE) since 2022 as a common platform for the African Governments with the mission to achieve a circular solid waste management ecosystem through evidence-based learning, research, capacity building and advocacy. GFCCE is now comprised of 18 member states from Africa and its work follows a set of common agenda to address the pressing challenges in the solid waste landscape of Africa. Generation of Urban Solid waste is estimated to be increased by as much as 300% in Sub-Saharan Africa from 174 million tonnes in 2016 to 522 million tonnes by 2050. While about 70% of the current generation is dumped in the open or mismanaged otherwise, this region is witnessing a burgeoning waste management crisis that is leading to irreversible environmental damage, as well as proving to be a serious economic challenge.
The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) of the Republic of Uganda, as one of the member states in the GFCCE, has entered into a partnership agreement with CSE. NEMA and CSE are going to co-host a tailor-made capacity building programme for local government and other officials during September 8 - 10, 2025 in Kampala, Uganda. Apart from various components of the waste value chain, the Solid Waste Information Management System (SWIMS) - a comprehensive tool for baseline data and concurrent monitoring will be introduced to help Uganda generate a national data inventory for credible planning and policy making. The event will be attended by officials from local governments, NEMA, the Ministry of Local Government, Ministry of Water and Environment, Uganda Bureau of Statistics, National Water and Sewerage Corporation and Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development.
