8th Workshop: Global Forum of Cities for Circular Economy (GFCCE)

Participation by invitation only

By 2050, cities in Sub-Saharan Africa are expected to generate 300 per cent more solid waste – the quantum will rise from 174 million tonne(MT) in 2016 to 522 MT. Currently, about 70 per cent of the waste is dumped in the open: this is leading to a colossus waste management crisis in this region. The challenge is to foster a gradual transition to circular economy through appropriate policies, institutional reforms and implementation practices.

Recognising the scale of the problem, Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) has facilitated the coming together of nations from the region on a common platform called the Global Forum of Cities for Circular Economy (GFCCE). GFCCE today has 18 countries, and its engagement revolves around a common agenda for action, with its focus on sharing learnings and experiences to enable a transition from linear to circular economy.

From March 10-12, this community would be meeting in Addis Ababa for the 8th time. Co-hosted by the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (FDRE) and CSE,the workshop will see participation from Botswana, Ethiopia, Eswatini, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Madagascar, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

The annual progress report on the common agenda for action will be released at the event. GFCCE-8 will mark a shift from intention to implementation -- from pilots to scale, from fragmented projects to bankable systems, and from community-only responsibility to shared accountability of governments, industry and cities.
