Orientation Workshop-Source Sustainability and Greywater Management in Rural Areas of Rajasthan

Participation by invitation only

Almost 50 per cent of Rajasthan’s drinking water comes from groundwater. Between 1984 and 2024, unhindered and rampant groundwater withdrawal has led to a dip of over 80 per cent in safe groundwater blocks. The state needs to focus on sustainable use of this source; at the same time, judicious management of greywater is also an imperative.

New Delhi-based think tank Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) is conducting a state-level orientation workshop on the subject in association with the Directorate of Watershed Development and Soil Conservation, Government of Rajasthan and MNIT, Jaipur. The workshop will bring together government functionaries and representatives from NGOs, CSOs and other private organisations from the water sector of the state – with the aim of building their capacities on moving towards safe and secure water sources.

WHAT THE WORKSHOP WILL COVER

  • Overview of the drinking water scenario in Rajasthan – the need for sustainability of sources
  • Groundwater depletion and its long-term impact on ecosystems and communities
  • Technological solutions for recharging groundwater and moving towards safe and secure groundwater sources in different hydrogeologies
  • Role of GIS and RS in mapping groundwater recharge potential areas
  • Emphasis on convergence of the watershed and rural development programmes for moving towards secure and safe drinking water sources
  • The role of private partners
  • Generation of greywater and its management
  • Best practices and successful state-level case studies
