Source Sustainability and Greywater Management in Rural Areas of Uttar Pradesh

Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) is conducting a state-level orientation workshop jointly with the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB), Northern Region, Lucknow on the subject of source sustainability and greywater management in the rural regions of Uttar Pradesh.

With almost 80 per cent of its drinking water coming from groundwater, the state extracted a humungous 238 billion cubic meter (BCM) of this source between 2013 and 2023. This extraction not only creates a decline in groundwater levels, but also generates a huge volume of greywater which flows untreated into ponds, lakes and rivers – managing this greywater has become an imperative.

This workshop aims to bring together different stakeholders working in the rural water sector to discuss the state of drinking water sources and greywater management in the state, and capacitate the participants on solutions which would allow them to move towards a safe and secure water future.

FOCUS AREAS FOR DISCUSSION

  • Overview of the drinking water scenario in Uttar Pradesh – the need for sustainability of sources
  • Understanding groundwater depletion and its long-term impact on ecosystems and communities
  • Technological solutions for recharging groundwater and moving towards safe and secure groundwater sources in different hydrogeologies
  • Convergence of different departments and agencies for moving towards secured and safe water sources
  • Role of private partners
  • Generation of greywater and its management  Best practices and successful state-level case studies
