Residential Training Programme: Replenishing Lakes and Aquifers

Almost every city in India is graced with the presence of a variety of waterbodies; and with rare exceptions, almost every waterbody is severely threatened today -- polluted, depleted, or simply built over. Cities, therefore, have turned to groundwater to meet their needs – and unchecked, rapacious withdrawal of groundwater has led to plunging levels of the resource. Rural areas are also facing a similar crisis.

Managing our groundwater thus, becomes critically important in this scenario. This involves mapping aquifers, locating potential recharge zones, and intelligently managing extraction. This means understanding changing rainfall patterns, soils, lithology, physiography and hydrogeology of cities and towns. And this also means designing and implementing sustainable waterbody rejuvenation solutions.

Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) invites applications for a specialised residential training programme that will focus on understanding existing challenges and technical aspects of aquifer management and revival and restoration of waterbodies.

COURSE CONTENT

  • Status of groundwater and lakes in urban India
  • Introduction to the science of lakes and the technologies to rejuvenate them
  • Existing policies and legal framework related to groundwater and lake management
  • Technologies to restore lakes and their catchments in different hydrogeological regions
  • Use of advanced tools to map aquifers and plan restoration of waterbodies at city and regional levels
  • Monitoring the quality and quantity of groundwater and lakes
  • Success stories from the Global South on groundwater recharge and lake rejuvenation
  • Site visits to examine successful implementation of groundwater management and lake restoration
