India is building a solar manufacturing industry at remarkable speed. However, most of this capacity remains concentrated in modules, with only a fraction extending upstream.
This report maps the evolving landscape across the solar PV value chain. It examines where manufacturing capacity is emerging, where import dependence persists, what is driving the competitiveness gap with China, and how domestic policies and trade measures have influenced the industry. It also considers the trade and competitiveness pressures facing Indian manufacturers in an increasingly competitive global market.
The study brings together the economics of manufacturing, technology dependence, trade flows and the evolution of India’s industrial-policy response. It asks where India should build capacity, how far upstream it should go, and where to direct the next phase of support.
