Rooftop Solar PV in India

Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) invites you to an official online release of its report titled ‘Rooftop Solar PV in India’. The release will be followed by a webinar focussing on the way forward for scaling up rooftop solar adoption, especially in the residential segment, and the role of various stakeholders, models and related challenges in realizing the envisaged target for rooftop solar capacity in India.

ABOUT THE REPORT
Rooftop solar photovoltaic (RTS PV) is a rapidly growing sector with a potential to provide reliable power, enhance energy security, and reduce transmission and distribution losses. However, residential contributions to RTS PV remain low due to various challenges, including rooftop rights, financial creditworthiness, and small system sizes. To achieve India’s target of 40 GW of rooftop solar by 2022, public-private partnerships are proposed, with developers recovering investments through power sales. The government aims to incentivise distribution companies (DISCOMs) to accelerate residential rooftop solar adoption and align with national goals to reduce emissions and increase renewable capacity.

This report attempts to underline various challenges and issues around RTS PV, with special focus on maximising residential rooftop space driven by DISCOMs. It also tries to understand the business case for DISCOMs to pursue RTS PV among urban and rural residential households. The report tries to address the concerns of all the important stakeholders, including policymakers and regulators, distribution companies, state nodal agencies and bankers. The report concludes DISCOMs will be able to save Rs 0.34–1.95 per unit through procurement of solar power to meet 10 per cent of the residential electricity demand. It also emphasizes the role of DISCOMs in collaboration and partnership with other stakeholders in steering and driving the sector as enabler, facilitator and off-taker.
