As part of a continuous effort to strengthen the capacity of Self-Help Groups (SHGs) involved in the operation and maintenance of Faecal Sludge Treatment Plants (FSTPs) across Uttar Pradesh, the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) has conducted a series of training initiatives aimed at empowering SHG women with critical skills and knowledge.
After the completion of the first training program held in the month of July scheduled from 16-25, 2024.CSE team members undertook city visits to Sitapur, Khurja, Raebareli, and Jaunpur to evaluate the current understanding of SHG women regarding the operation and maintenance of FSTPs. These visits, conducted through individual interviews and focused group discussions, highlighted the need for a second refresher training to address identified knowledge gaps.
Focus of the Second Refresher Training
To enhance their exposure, supervisors and operators from different cities were invited to participate in a detailed training program, coinciding with the inauguration of the Standard Operating Procedure for Operation and Maintenance of FSTPs and Co-treatment Plants.A state-level training program was organized in Lucknow on December 19-20, 2024, by the Urban Development Department, Uttar Pradesh, in collaboration with the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE). The training aimed to empower stakeholders with the knowledge for efficient and sustainable operations and maintenance (O&M) of faecal sludge treatment plants (FSTPs) and co-treatment facilities. Participants were provided with comprehensive insights into state-developed O&M Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), with a focus on safety measures and innovative solutions. Supervisors, being key personnel responsible for day-to-day operations and coordination with Urban Local Bodies (ULBs), received comprehensive training alongside ULB officials, such as junior engineers, sanitation inspectors and plant operators.
Specific roles, such as gardeners and sanitation workers, required practical and hands-on training .Hence, the second level refresher training was designed to cater to their operational responsibilities.
City-specific treatment chains:
Given that each city implements unique treatment chains with different operational modules, the training sessions were tailored to equip SHG women with all the relevant information required for effective operation and maintenance in the form of big panels placed inside the treatment plant premises. This initiative ensures that SHG women have comprehensive, hands-on knowledge to perform their daily tasks efficiently along with reinforcement of the previous training imparted.
Training Participants:
More than 46 participants attended the training, including:
