Online Training on Decentralised Wastewater Treatment and Local Reuse – Issues, Challenges & Potential

Background

Small scale sewage treatment systems and local reuse in urban areas is key to achieving citywide water and sanitation. Decentralised approach devolves level of the application so that wastewater can be treated at different scale at affordable costs, cutting the cost of pumping long distances and promoting local reuse of treated wastewater – a major step forward towards making cities water sensitive and contributing to improved river health/flows.

This online training is a part of series of activities envisaged under 3-year duration CSE programme – ‘Capacity building initiative focusing on ‘Making Ganga basin cities water sensitive’. Under this initiative series of – webinars, workshops trainings (both online and residential), field exposure visits, knowledge conclaves aimed at engaging 1,300+ number state / municipal functionaries and other sector players. The programme is supported by National Mission Clean Ganga and is part of the series of ongoing efforts by NMCG aimed to ensuring convergence of Namami Gange Mission with national flagship urban missions (AMRUT, Smart Cities, Swachh Bharat Mission, HRIDAY, NULM) and other missions (Atal Bhujal Yojana, Jal Jeewan Mission, Jal Shakti Mission) at state /city level across Ganga basin states.

About the training

The training will focus on cost effective decentralised wastewater treatment and local reuse - a key area of intervention for mainstreaming affordable citywide water and sanitation.

Aim

To capacitate the government officials/practitioners and build the knowledge about concepts and potential of decentralized wastewater treatment including local reuse of treated wastewater.

Training Highlights

  • Overview of existing issues and challenges in the wastewater treatment – urban sanitation and river pollution abatement.
  • Understanding of the approach and concept of small scale low cost wastewater management and local reuse at different scales in cities.
  • Best Management Practices (BMPs) and case studies of successfully implemented projects showcasing technology options and socio economic effectiveness.
