The technology was installed to reduce dependency on septic tanks as the night shelter is used by close to 200 people every night and is in close proximity (20 meters) to the Yamuna river bio digester was seen as a faster alternative to septic tank

Treatment technology

  • The facility at GeetaGhat night shelter has 12 toilets and 6 bio digester tanks
  • 2 toilets each are connected to a single bio digester tank
  • The capacity of each bio digester is 5000 litres.
  • The biodigester has four sections and the wastewater from toilets passes through each section
  • Material used to create sections in the biodigester is covered with coir
  • Inoculum is added to the coir on the sectioning material which reduced the solid matter from the wastewater and acts as a filter to the liquid content
  • Gas produced in the system during digestion is let out using vents
  • The system does not require any external energy for its operation
  • An outlet for the treated water has been provided, this connects to a reed bed which further purifies the treated water
