Consultative Meeting held at Lucknow for Mainstreaming Co-Treatment of Faecal Sludge and Septage (FSS) in STPs in Uttar Pradesh

As part of Programm Support for an effective FSSM in UP, the CSE-PSU team of Water Programme hadorganised a consultative meeting for presenting its Draft Report on Mainstreaming Co-Treatment of Faecal Sludge in STPs across UP and Ganga Basin for abatement of river pollution. The meeting was organized inConference Hall, Directorate Local Bodies Office in Lucknow on 20th Aug, 2019.

The meeting was chaired by Principal Secretary, Department of Urban Development (GoUP) and included other senior UP state officials, such as Director Local Bodies, Additional Mission Director AMRUT and Additional Director SMCG. The other officials attended the consultative meeting were engineers from Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam; PMU officials of State Mission for Clean Ganga (SMCG), SBM & AMRUT


In this meeting, CSE team had briefly explained about the issues and concerns regarding the potential impacts of adding Faecal Sludge& Septage (FSS) on STP Treatment efficiency and operational issues. CSE team provided various options for Co-Treatment modules with its tentative cost, area and the monitoring requirements. In addition to this, the team presented the implementation approach for scaling-up Co-Treatment of Faecal sludge in STPs across the States in UP. CSE also highlighted the reuse potential of FSSbio-solids andimprovement in product value and market potential for reuse of biosolids by Co-composting of FSS solids with organic Municipal Solid Waste.

Principal Secretary, DOUD has appreciated the concept put forward by CSE and agreed for a proposed Pilot Project for Co-Treatmentof FSS at Bharwara STP in Lucknow. In turn, CSE shall provide technical support for implementation and monitoring support for testing the impacts of FSS on STP treatment efficiency.

CSE also updated thestate officials about the model projectfor Co-Treatment of FSS at STP in Bijnor which would also include Co-compostingof FSS bio-solids with organic municipal solid waste. Apart from this, CSE is also supporting the state in implementing amodel FSTP project in Chunar which is under tendering stage.
