The Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) successfully conducted a two-week online training programme titled “Integrated Online and Residential Training on Revive Your River” from July 9 to 22, 2025. The training was designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of professionals and institutions involved in planning and implementing river rejuvenation initiatives, especially in urban areas. A total of 104 professionals registered for the programme, with 98 confirmed participants, reflecting a strong interest in sustainable water management. Participants came from seven Indian states and represented a wide range of sectors, including urban local bodies, Jal Nigam, public health and engineering department, state development agencies, and national NGOs. This diversity led to engaging discussions and enriched the learning experience. The programme also ensured gender inclusivity, with 38 percent female and 62 percent male participants.

The training followed a blended learning format, combining expert-led live virtual sessions, interactive discussions, and self-paced modules delivered through the Moodle learning platform. The course was inaugurated by Mr. Vivek Kumar Sah, Programme Officer at CSE, who provided an overview of the course objectives, structure, and Moodle interface. Over the two weeks, several distinguished speakers addressed a range of topics. These included Ms. Sushmita Sengupta on the Yamuna cleaning agenda, Mr. Shashi Shekhar on urban river challenges using the Ganga as a case study, and legal perspectives from Ms. Aditi Deodhar and Mr. Stalin D on the Mula-Mutha and Mithi rivers. Other sessions included government and citizen-led initiatives by Mr. Rajeev Ranjan Mishra, faecal sludge management in Hyderabad by Ms. Hiranya Tallam, and decentralised solutions in non-sewered areas by Ms. Umra Anees. The training concluded with a session by Mr. Jyoti Prasad Dadhich on wastewater reuse, followed by a Q&A session to reinforce learning and promote peer exchange.

Feedback from the participants
Thank you for organizing such insightful sessions on river revival. The speakers’ long-term commitment and firsthand experiences were truly inspiring. Their stories highlighted the persistent challenges in rejuvenating rivers and the determination required to overcome them. These discussions have enriched our understanding and inspired deeper reflection on water conservation efforts. I learned so much from the online training and would be glad to join the upcoming residential programme on river revival.

The training proved to be highly beneficial, offering valuable insights that significantly aligned with and enhanced my research interests. The content was well-structured, engaging, and directly relevant to my work. I am confident that the knowledge gained will inform and strengthen my future research and project initiatives. I enrolled in this course through the Wetland Mitras Project with the objective of developing a deeper understanding of the critical issue of river degradation, particularly in metropolitan areas. I also aimed to acquire practical skills and explore actionable solutions. I look forward to applying these learnings to contribute effectively to river restoration efforts.
