Internship for a Sanitation Project

Duration of Internship: January 27th to April 30th, 2020 (Three months)

Background of project -

Safe water and adequate sanitation are indispensable for healthy ecosystems, reducing poverty, and achieving inclusive growth, social well-being and sustainable livelihoods (UN website). Around 2.4 billion people lack access to basic sanitation services (toilets, latrines), Nearly 1,000 children die due to preventable water and sanitation-related diarr hoeal diseases. By 2030, almost 60 percent of the world’s population will live in urban areas. 95 percent of urban expansion in the next decade will take place in the developing world. Rapid urbanization is exerting pressure on the living environment, and public health.

A first step towards providing adequate sanitation services in urban areas is to monitor the sanitation service chain, to identify its strengths and weaknesses, from containment to safe disposal or resource recovery. Shit Flow Diagrams (also known as Excreta Flow Diagram) SFDs can help achieve this by offering a new and innovative way to engage sanitation experts, political leaders and civil society in coordinated discussions about excreta management in their city.

Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) under SFD programme has developed SFDs for more than 100 cities around globe and used these SFDs for advocacy in mainstreaming urban sanitation programming at city-wide scale. CSE has successfully completed two phases of this programme and is now entering into 3rd and final phase. Within this 3rd phase, the Centre intends to expand the SFD database and also explore different applications of SFDs like monitoring, planning, equity etc.
