Online Global Training Programme on Faecal Sludge Management in Rural Areas, July 29- August 12, 2020

The Rural Water-Waste Management Team conducted a two-week online training on faecal sludge management in rural areas. The training was attended by 106 participants from different countries of Global South.

The participants were from India, Nepal and African countries like Zambia, Kenya, Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda, Ghana, Ethiopia and Rwanda. Government officials, Non-profits, Consultants and Academicians participated in the programme.

The objective of this training was to advocate the necessity of safe treatment, disposal and/or reuse of faecal sludge in the rural areas and build the capacity of the stakeholders on these issues.

The online training involved self-study, online interactive discussions and live interaction with the experts. The live session enabled the participants to interact directly with experts like, Dr. Sunita Narain, Director General, CSE, Krishna Rao, consultant, experts from Non-Profit Gramalaya and UNICEF.

The participants appreciated the training programme.

WAOH!!!! This training has really opened my eyes and knowledge to the benefits of fecal sludge management. Though right now in Nigeria, we are not really into the human fecal sludge treatment and the use of it as manure but sure this a good start for re orientation and mass campaign strategies to my state. Just yesterday,in order to eradicate open defecation in my state,I was given an assignment to construct a bio digester toilet. And I am very sure all my training here will be very useful and guide me. I am really grateful. Looking forward to the advanced course on FSM..

As the course comes to an end, i would like to thank everyone for their continued interactions, discussion of real queries/problems helped me learn a lot. I want to take these learnings to my own home (already started RWH and recharge last year), working on improving the existing septic tank with baffles. In my village I want to revive a defunct gobar gas plant by adding the faecal waste to it. Currently it's a simple one pit system. I face challenges in finding experts to guide in the retrofitting and new construction. I wanted to propose to CSE to start a directory of such expert agencies or persons. Even a mason who knows this work should be listed there. A lot of work remains undone not because of lack of funds but because of lack of skilled manpower. I should be able to get easy access to expert masons, technicians, engineers in my local area. Hope CSE can help, I can start from my village, block, district. Thank you!
