Why do our cities flood? What can be done to tackle this issue? Indian cities such as Chennai, Bengaluru and Mumbai get swamped by swirling floodwaters almost every year with frightening regularity. In 2024, urban floods had ravaged many nations, from Afghanistan, Indonesia, Kenya and the Democratic Republic of Congo to France and Germany. A combination of factors is responsible: erratic and extreme weather phenomena induced by a changing climate, shoddy urban planning and unregulated urbanisation, and a lack of respect for a critical resource – water and waterbodies.
Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) invites applications for its two-week online training programme on understanding and managing urban floods – a critical first step in developing sustainable strategies for building flood-resilient cities. CSE’s water and wastewater team, which would be spearheading this training, is one of the oldest and most experienced programmes at the Centre; its vast stock of subject knowledge, practical understanding, information resources and training experience makes it uniquely placed to conceive and conduct this programme.
WHAT THE TRAINING WILL COVER:
|
WATER MANAGEMENT IN URBAN AREAS OF THE GLOBAL SOUTH
URBAN FLOODING IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES
SUCCESS STORIES FROM THE GLOBAL SOUTH ON URBAN FLOOD MANAGEMENT
CSE’S TRAINING PROGRAMMES
“The training was extremely useful. It provided valuable insights that directly helped my research interests and broadened my understanding of the key topics related to climate-resilient urban systems. I look forward to applying the knowledge gained in my future research and projects.”

Thank you for organizing the course Managing Urban Floods in a Climate-Risked World. It was a well-structured and enriching experience. The content, presentations, and shared resources were highly valuable. I found the session on flood hazard mapping particularly interesting. While the topic was well-covered, a more hands-on component would have enhanced the learning experience. The demonstration on integrating Bhuvan with Google Earth Pro was especially helpful. I would be keen to join any future course offering in-depth, practical training in geospatial analysis. Such a module would likely attract interest from many professionals with relevant technical backgrounds. Jayita Mukherjee – Student, Tata Institute of Social Sciences |

Thank you very much—I learned a great deal from the course! It was a pleasure to be part of the programme, and I truly appreciated the insightful content and engaging structure. Please do keep me informed about future opportunities. I’ve been familiar with CSE since 1996, when I had the chance to interview Ms. SunitaNarain for a study I was conducting at the time. It’s truly inspiring to see how the institute has grown over the years and become such a respected and influential voice in the environmental sector. The training programme was highly enriching and professionally conducted. As a technical expert in food and water analysis, it provided me with valuable insights into managing water hygiene and sanitation during natural calamities. The sessions led by Ms. Sengupta, Ms. Bhatia, Dr. Rao, Mr. Mishra, and Mr. Sah were particularly informative and well-delivered. Their collective expertise and clarity greatly enhanced my understanding. I would be grateful to receive the related presentations. Kindly keep me informed about future programmes, particularly those involving geospatial tools like Google Earth Pro. Pallavi M. Salunke Food AnalystPublic Health Laboratory,Maharashtra, |
