About Cse

Communication for Awareness

CSE researches the underlying processes of change and events and pushes for sustainable policies in the area of natural resource management. Through its informational products, CSE has provided advance warnings, perceptive analyses and intellectual leadership in the field of environmental management and helped to build an informed public opinion.

Education and Training

CSE’s Environmental Education programme takes environment issues into the classroom by organising practical workshops and talks about sustainability issues for school-students, youth and school teachers. The unit also conducts the Ecological Footprint project, which consists of eco-tours, lectures, and poster competitions that teach children about the ecological dimensions of their city. Such programmes help children understand the holistic unity between environment and sustainable development.

Pollution Monitoring

CSE started its urban air quality programme in 1996 to protect public health in Indian cities. The programme elicited tremendous response from the government, the public and the judiciary. In the past ten years, CSE’s programme, supported by judicial action and the media, has successfully catalysed significant changes to lower air pollution levels in the city.

Knowledge Portal

CSE is the developer and manager of the India Environment Portal, a one-stop shop for information and knowledge on environment and development issues. It is aimed at developing an open, networked and informed society, who can use knowledge to make change. Open source platform for the people’s portal

Research And Advocacy

CSE’s efforts are specifically designed to create awareness about problems and propose sustainable solutions. CSE searches for solutions that reconcile economic development with environmental conservation; solutions that people and communities can implement themselves; and it pushes the government to create frameworks in which people can act on their own. CSE believes that the urban, educated group are the most environmentally illiterate and therefore, directs its activities towards educating this group.
