Rainwater Harvesting

Training Programme on Urban Rainwater Harvesting

Date: July 27 - 31, 2010 Every summer, there is a big hue and cry for drinking water in our cities. Rapid urbanization and industrialization is leading to over exploitation and pollution of water resources. It leads to scarcity of water. On the other hand our water demands are increasing day by day.

Maintenance

To prevent leaves and debris from entering the system, mesh filters should be provided at the mouth of the drainpipe. Further, a first-flush device should be provided in the conduit before it connects to the storage container.

Components of Rainwater Harvesting system

A rainwater harvesting system comprises components of various stages - transporting rainwater through pipes or drains, filtration, and storage in tanks for reuse or recharge. The common components of a rainwater harvesting system involved in these stages are illustrated here.

The Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai is now making frantic efforts to ease the crisis. On July 15, its standing committee decided to induce artificial rains through cloud seeding.

Construction

Procedures and specifications for construction of storage and recharge tanks are explained below. There are a lot of similarities in the construction steps of both storage and recharge structures.

Maintenance and Monitoring

Once you have installed a RWH system it is a good idea to also set a system for monitoring. How much water you are catching How much of this you are using How much you are recharging This will help you to provide concrete evidence of the impact of rainwater harvesting If the data is positive it will help to catalyse other people to follow in your footsteps.
