CSE is an independent, public interest organisation into advocacy and knowledge based activism on issues of science, technology, environment and development. CSE has been actively campaigning on the issues of water, air pollution, tribals and forests and other issues of environment since its inception in 1980s.
CSE has been spreading awareness on the above issues through its various out reach programmes. Its website and newsletters provides people readily accessible information on environment. Its fortnightly magazine, Down To Earth and its supplement Gobar Times reaches out to more than a lakh readers and provides stories on environment from across the country. A comprehensive library provides books, documents, newspaper clippings, journals and audio visual aids to get information on all environment related subjects. Media programmes like workshops, fellowships and press conferences have tried to build an understanding of issues and enhance their reportage. In last few years CSE has also started to pass on its skills and information to other NGOs, students, government organisations and regulators through its training programmes. Besides all research units have their respective outreach programmes that address their respective communities to keep them clued in with the current happenings.
