According to the United Nations, every year, over 52 million tonne of plastic waste enters our seas and oceans. These huge quantities of waste are smothering marine life, severely impacting coastal livelihoods, and breaking down into microplastics which enter the food chain, playing havoc with our health. But this waste -- marine litter -- doesn’t begin at sea. Much of the plastic we discard on our streets and in our cities travels through drains, rivers and waterways and reaches the coast, from where it slips into the oceans.
Join us for a LIVE CHAT as we trace the journey of plastic waste from our homes to the ocean and explore why tackling marine litter begins with better waste management on land. Drawing from Down To Earth’s recent cover story and documentary, Sea of Plastic, CSE’s Akshit Sangomla, K A Shreya and Siddharth G Singh will retrace the subject through stories from the ground, discuss the policy and governance gaps driving the crisis, and explore the solutions needed to keep plastics out of our seas.
