Online Training on Plastic Waste and Healthcare Waste Management in Tanzania

Plastic waste and healthcare waste are two streams of waste management of which has become a mammoth task across the world, and especially in the low and middle income countries of the Global South. Approximately 275 million tonne (MT) of plastic waste is generated each year in the world; of this, between eight to 11 MT finds its way into the oceans, affecting human and marine ecosystems. Of all the plastics ever manufactured, only 9 per cent has been recycled, 12 per cent has been incinerated, and the rest has been either dumped, buried or burned openly in the environment.

Plastic is also being used extensively in the healthcare sector, especially so after the emergence of the covid-19 pandemic. The World Health Organization (WHO) says 15 per cent of all the waste generated in hospitals and healthcare centres is hazardous in nature and has to be treated with utmost care due to its infectious nature.

As a developing economy, Tanzania (like India), is severely challenged by the onerous task of managing plastic and hospital waste, and needs to find sustainable and more efficient solutions and strategies.

New Delhi (India)-based Centre for Science and Environment’s (CSE) global programme has been focusing extensively on providing knowledgedriven support to nations in Africa. As part of the ongoing partnership with the Government of Tanzania, CSE recognises the need to adopt resource-efficient waste management regimes, based on which it has conceptualised this two-day online training programme on plastic and healthcare waste, for city managers and officials from Tanzania.
