Parliament passes Energy Conservation (Amendment) Bill

On December 12th, 2022, the Rajya Sabha passed the Energy Conservation (Amendment) Bill—the aim is to mandate non-fossil sources of energy and establish a domestic carbon market in India. Minister of Power and New & RE, said, "We are relentlessly marching ahead towards our target of reducing India's carbon intensity by 45% by 2030."Some of the provisions in the Bill that were incorporated to support energy transition include---Specify minimum share of consumption of non-fossil sources by designated consumers as energy or feedstock, specify the carbon credit trading scheme, coverage of large residential buildings within the fold of energy conservation and enhance the scope of the Energy Conservation Building Code to include the aspect of sustainability.
