Promoting Sustainable Sanitation in Ethiopia Faecal Sludge and Septage Management

Ethiopia’s rapid urbanisation is placing increasing pressure on its already limited urban water supply and sanitation systems. A large share of the urban population relies on on-site sanitation, with many households using basic facilities; wastewater treatment infrastructure is limited. The Government of Ethiopia, with support from the World Bank’s Second Urban Water Supply and Sanitation Project, is working to expand access to improved sanitation services, strengthen wastewater and faecal sludge management, and develop supporting infrastructure across multiple towns.

Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), the New Delhi (India)-based think tank has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Water and Energy in Ethiopia to establish a knowledge partnership focused on collaborative research, capacity building, knowledge exchange, and advocacy in areas of mutual interest related to water and sanitation. Under this MoU, a series of training programmes and exposure visits (to selected towns where sanitation infrastructure is being developed) have been planned, aimed at strengthening the capacity of government officials on faecal sludge management.

CSE will also explore potential areas of engagement and partnerships with some key stakeholders.
