Development through data: How to effectively communicate through data

The saying “what gets measured, gets managed” is more true today than ever. We are now in a time when data is overflowing; information is available from so many sources and so fast that sometimes we end up not making any sense of the happenings. And unanalysed data is as good as data not collected. So, processing data and information is the new way to communicate.

Objective

This three-day hands-on workshop is specially structured to build the skills required to access data, analyse and present it in a coherent and lucid format. The workshop will be led by data specialists, journalists and communication experts at Down to Earth (DTE) and the Centre for Science and Environment

After attending this workshop, the participants will

  • Appreciate the use of data as the effective medium for communication and informed decision-making on environment and development in the digital age

  • Learn how and where to look and research for relevant data

  • Understand how and when to use numbers

  • Get empowered with skills to analyse, interpret and give a perspective to data-stories.

  • Be able to process, visualise and transform data into simple, compelling and informative visualisations  - web/print

  • Know and be familiar with tools/software for effective data research, processing and presentation

Module 3: Data processing and analysis to make data meaningful

This 3-day skills development workshop is intended for professionals working with non-profits, research organizations, media, government organizations and corporate, who want to learn the basic skills of data analysis and presentation essential to communicate effectively and strategically using data.

It will specially benefit the following

  • Data managers, statisticians, researchers and students

  • Corporate social responsibility (CSR) /PR professionals in industries

  • Journalists – print/web

 

Medium of Instruction

The workshop will be conducted in English. Functional proficiency in English is expected.

Course Fee

The course is available to you at a fee of Rs 12000 per participant. There is a 40 per cent discount for NGO participants and students. Accommodation and related costs are not included. However, CSE can help you find a place to stay.

Eligibility and application

  • This short course is limited to 20 participants selected from open application process.

  • Applications are invited from India and other countries working full-time or part-time in development and/or social organisations and handling advocacy, awareness, activism and other outreach and engagement work.

  • Those working with government, corporate and international development organisations handling documentation, communication, public relation and web outreach activities are also encouraged to apply.

  • Multiple applications from the same organisation are welcome, although they will compete among themselves.

  • Interested journalists may also apply. This is not a journalism workshop, but various concepts of data analysis and visualisation covered in the workshop will be useful for journalists.
