Director - Renewable Energy Programme

Centre for Science and Environment (www.cseindia.org) is a leading independent, non-governmental policy research institution based in New Delhi. For more than three decades now, CSE has helped shape policies and build public awareness to bring change in areas of pollution mitigation and public health security, low carbon development, natural resource management and livelihood security to make growth sustainable and inclusive. 

About the job and role: 

CSE known for its rigorous scientific policy research and advocacy on environmental issues, is looking for a Director to head its Renewable Energy programme. 

The programme advocates for increased share of clean energy, particularly in the context of energy access for the poorest with emphasis on decentralized, off-grid or grid interactive clean power options. The programme also plays a critical role acting as a watchdog on decarbonisation and developments in mainstream RE in India and the global South, including south Asia and Africa, and highlights important issues towards energy security and sustainability. 

The Director for the Renewable Energy programme is expected to take the lead role in overall research, advocacy and campaign efforts of the programme. We are looking for a highly driven and confident leader, who can effectively build alliances with a wide cross section of decision makers and sector stakeholders. 

Most importantly, we are looking for a colleague who wants to be part of the change we need in the world. We need commitment but also a high order of skills; to research, to write and to persuade. 

Qualification, Experience and Competencies 

  • A minimum Master’s Degree or equivalent in energy, environment policy, or related field. Candidates with both technical and social sciences qualification can apply. A mix of technical and policy background will be preferred
  • A minimum of 12 to 15 years of prior experience of working with organisations in the sectors of energy, environment or climate change is desirable
  • Demonstrated competencies and track record in research, advocacy as well as in communication / outreach is essential
  • Prior experience advocacy in engaging with Central and/or State level ministries and private sector agencies related to the clean energy sector is a definite plus
  • Experience in engaging with global and regional forums on climate and energy is desirable
  • Knowledge and familiarity with decentralised energy options for livelihoods and energy security are a definite plus
  • Significant experience of leading and managing a team is essential
