Residential Training Programme: The Indian Poultry Sector

The use of antibiotics in food systems is well recognised as a driver of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), a silent pandemic that impacts health, food security, livelihood and attainment of sustainable development goals. In the poultry sector, this includes nontherapeutic antibiotic use for promoting growth and for mass disease prevention (which is not a ‘real’ prevention). It also includes misuse and overuse of antibiotics which are critically important for humans.

At the same time, the sector is important for livelihoods, nutrition and economy. Its growth must be sustainable while being productive. Part of this can happen through scaling up of preventive approaches which can help reduce the occurrence of diseases and/or help minimise use of drugs including antibiotics. Another approach could be to move towards non-intensive systems like backyard poultry farming, which are not excessively dependent on chemicals.

Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) is organising a three-day workshop and training programme for stakeholders and interested individuals to develop an understanding on how the need for antibiotics in poultry farming can be minimised through preventive approaches such as better management, vaccination, biosecurity, use of alternatives, and use of improved breeds.

PARTICIPATION BY NOMINATION

The programme is open to officials of animal husbandry departments and Krishi Vigyan Kendras of poultry-producing states in northern India, who will be nominated to attend it by their respective departments. It is also open to other regulators, industry professionals, the scientific community, and sustainable poultry producers – subject to availability of seats.

This programme is partially supported by CSE. Participants will have to travel to Delhi at their own cost. CSE will take care of the remaining expenses and arrangements – including travel from Delhi to Nimli and back, boarding-lodging at AAETI, and all the training costs.
