Sustainable Food Systems: An Agenda for Climate-Risked Times

Rising numbers and intensity of extreme weather events are a big concern for a large part of India’s farming population, which is already vulnerable due to economic and ecological challenges. These challenges include declining soil health, productivity and incomes due to chemical-dependent monoculture practices, an inadequate safety net, and exploitative market conditions. Agriculture and food systems need to be more sustainable and resilient, which means in addition to improving livelihood, nutrition and natural resources, such systems should help reduce losses due to extreme climate events.

Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) is organising a three-day training and workshop – which will bring together 35 experts, civil society colleagues and practitioners from different parts of the country -- to explore, learn about, discuss and debate the following areas of study:

• Extreme weather events and their impacts
• Soil health and carbon credit: improving productivity and farmers’ incomes
• Agro-ecological practices for mitigation, adaptation and resilience
• Adaptation through weather-crop information (weather forecasting and agro-met advisories)
• Resilience through insurance to cover risks and losses (PMFBY and role of technology)
• Emissions and mitigation (livestock emissions, nitrous oxide emissions)
