Review Meeting between CSE & DoUD (U.P.) for FSSM held on 7th July 2020

CSE - Programme Support Unit Lucknow and Technical Support Units in Bijnor and Chunar had a review meeting with Department of Urban Development (DoUD), Government of Uttar Pradesh, for the support in mainstreaming Faecal Sludge and Septage Management in the state. The objective of the meeting was to brief DoUD (U.P.) on the activities done in Financial Year 2019-20 and updating on the activities proposed for the coming year.

The meeting was chaired by Shri Anurag Yadav (IAS) State Mission Director AMRUT & Secretary DoUD (U.P.).

Dr Suresh Kumar Rohilla, (Senior Director, CSE) gave presentation on the activities and initiatives for support FSSM in the state including activities undertaken and proposed for COVID-19 support to the cities in Uttar Pradesh. Key points and action points from the meeting included:

  • A Model FSSM Bye-Laws and City-Level FSSM Guidelines. This can be in line with the ones prepared by CSE - TSU for Chunar and Bijnor.
  • A template for self assessment of ULBs on citywide sanitation and excreta management.
  • Sensitization of ULBs on the pollution load in the drains and nullahs in the city and how they can assess the risk and provide solutions.
  • Demonstration projects for re-use of treated wastewater preferably at the Lohia Park (Lucknow) where wastewater from Community Toilets and adjacent nullahs can be treated for horticulture purposes. The site can also be used as a demonstration site for a Sanitation Park with facilities including features of water sensitive urban design like rainwater harvesting. 

CSE highlighted its commitment towards supporting COVID-19 response in the state by providing protective gear for sanitation workers, providing access to foot operated handwashing facilities for vulnerable people in the cities of Bijnor, Lucknow, Bakshi ka Talab, Unnao, Chunar, Prayagraj Gangaghat and Lakhimpur and dissemination of information related to COVID-19 response through virtual trainings.

The Secretary DoUD was also briefed about the MalAsur campaign launched by MoHUA, NMCG and Directorate of Local Bodies. The Secretary would consider piloting in one of the AMRUT towns, initially in Unnao where FSTP is operational.
