Understanding and Using Solar Energy in Schools

Centre for Science and Environment’s Green Schools Programme (GSP) has been working with school teachers and educators from across India to build understanding and knowledge about climate change, and explore effective ways to teach the subject in classrooms. One of the key initiatives of GSP in this direction is Solar 30. Supported by Himachal Pradesh Council for Science, Technology & Environment (HIMCOSTE), this programme aims to work exclusively with selected schools in Himachal Pradesh, with the focus on discussions and knowledge-building on solar energy.

This three-day workshop is part of Solar 30, building on the success of previous workshops held in Solan, Nimli, and Kangra, this year’s session will focus on advanced applications, teaching integration, and practical innovations around renewable energy.

Highlights of this year’s workshop:

  • Hands-on learning through rooftop solar visits, GSP audit practice, and energy-efficient product demonstrations.
  • Focused sessions on solar energy, including system components, data tracking, and reporting for schools.
  • Energy-efficient building insights through an expertled session on sustainable design and materials.
  • Interactive activities, including quizzes, case-based learning, and designing classroom renewable-energy activities.
  • Collaborative innovation via group challenges to develop solar and sustainability solutions for schools and communities.
