The habitat team conducted a training on the topic of ‘Waste management: A cradle-to-cradle approach with focus on C&D waste management and dust control’. The training held at AAETI from 10th to 12th October, 2022 was attended by 36 participants comprising of officers from municipalities, C&D plant operator, pollution control committees, government construction bodies, academia, practitioners etc.

Day one of the training introduced participants to the issues and risks associated with construction and demolition waste and the national and international goals linked with C&D waste management. The post lunch session presented an overview of methodologies followed for estimation of C&D waste, this was followed by case studies of C&D waste management from various municipalities from Delhi NCR region and Rajasthan region with whom CSE has been working on the subject. The next session was on environmental impact assessment with focus on ‘air environment’. The last two sessions of the day were dedicated to explaining the green features of the AAETI campus followed by a walking tour that also included a C&D waste exercise.

Day two began with a session on dust management, mapping sources and running cumulative impacts using air quality modelling. This was followed by two hands-on sessions by Sayani Sen who introduced participants to estimation of C&D waste using GIS. Mr. Nimish Gupta followed this up with an exercise on GIS where he demonstrated a methodology to estimate legacy waste. The post lunch sessions included a participatory exercise with the audience on determining a typical construction timeline. Once the audience had an idea of all the processes involved in construction and their dust generation, they were introduced to session on process management and safeguards for material handling at site and city level for dust-abatement.

Day three began with by a role-playing exercise to understand the responsibilities of municipalities, pollution control board, developer and site engineers in proper C&D waste management and on-site dust abatement measures.
