India’s policy landscape for managing plastic waste delegates huge responsibilities to urban local bodies. To ensure accountability of Indian industries towards collecting and recycling plastic packaging waste, there is now a legal mandate for producers, brand owners and importers. While the policy framework is robust, the current state of plastic pollution calls for prioritising capacity building of municipal government officials to improve on-ground implementation.
Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) has been supporting the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs in its initiatives towards strengthening implementation of the flagship Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0 since 2021. Besides,CSE has been working to reduce plastic pollution including in the marine environment, through research, capacity building and advocacy.
Recognising the need to equip municipal governments with strategies, tools and knowledge to navigate the plastic landscape, CSE has announced this four-day tailor-made residential training programme. This training is designed for municipal officials, state-level authorities, pollution control boards, private sector and other stakeholders in plastics circularity. It will provide an in-depth understanding of topics ranging from regulatory frameworks, implementation modalities, ways of reducing mismanaged plastics and plastic leakages, etc.
