The Biodiversity Confab-Food on the Negotiation Table

The 11th Governing Body Meeting of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture will be kicking off on November 24 in Peru. The main goal of this critical treaty has been to ensure that crop diversity is conserved, used sustainably, and shared equitably so that it can continue to support global food security. <

But despite its over two decades of existence, the treaty has not helped much. Though there has been more than six million accessions of genetic material, benefits have been shared only in a handful of cases. Member countries have been trying to improve the multilateral system of access and benefit sharing since 2013, but these efforts have only further highlighted the schism between developed and developing nations: developed countries have generally been the users and developing ones the providers of genetic resources.

As the world prepares to slug it out again, join us to discuss the Treaty and all that it stands for in our second Biodiversity Confab, a series of online conversations on key issues and concerns related to biodiversity and its management
