Sponge Iron Industry: The Regulatory Challenge

Sponge iron is an intermediate product used for the manufacture of steel. Also referred to as Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) or Hot Briquetted Iron (HBI) in its compacted form, sponge iron is not a new route to steel production. For the production of primary iron, this route is recognized as an alternate route to blast furnace. Gare Palma Coal Sub Block IV/6

The Gare Palma Coal Sub Block IV/6 was allotted jointly to M/s Jindal Steel & Power Limited & M/s Nalwa Sponge Iron Limited by the Ministry of Coal on January 13, 2006 to meet the coal-requirement of their respective Sponge Iron Plants situated at distances of 45 km and 25 km from the Coal Block at Raigarh & Taraimal respectively.

Analysis of EIA Report - Bhavnagar Nuclear Power Plant

Background of the technical report Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) is planning to set up a 6,000 MWe nuclear power plant in Bhavnagar district of Gujarat. On behalf of the local community there, an NGO called Paryavaran Mitra requested the Centre for Science and Environment to technically evaluate the Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) report of the project.

Analysis of the EIA Report of the proposed Treatment, Storage and Disposal Facility (TSDF) at Dahej Industrial Estate, Bharuch, Gujarat by Bharuch Enviro Infrastructure Ltd. (BEIL)

 Bharuch Enviro Infrastructure Ltd. (BEIL) has proposed to set up a Treatment, Storage and Disposal Facility (TSDF) at Dahej Industrial Estate, along with two Multiple Effect Evaporation (MEE) plants and various utilities and infrastructure facilities.The project involves a Secured Landfill Facility (SLF) for Hazardous waste with a capacity of 1.4 MTPA (14 Lacs MT). Capacity of the MEE plants is 600 KL/day (Phase wise: 3 X 200 KL/day)2. The duration of operation of the TSDF site is 15 years.

CSE 's Round Table on Mercury Pollution in Sonbhadra

Pollution in Sonbhadra area is not new and has been talked about for many years but no action has been taken to check the pollution. This has led to long term health impacts which have now started to show up in the population of the region. CSE took up a study to look at these health impacts and to investigate the possible causes.
