For over a decade, the country has debated the need to reform the mining sector byamending the Mines and Mineral (Development and Regulation) (MMDR) Act, 1957.
India is a mineral rich country with more than 20,000 mineral deposits. The Indian mining industry is at par with the world's. India is the second largest producer of chromite, barytes and talc, third largest producer of coal and lignite and fourth largest producer of iron ore and kyanite, andalusite and sillimanite.
This book is an attempt to document all the complexities of mining. While, it is true that mining is essential, it is not a simple 'dig and sell' proposition for a country like India. Its challenges are immense. The book gives an overview of these challenges - protection and preservation of environment and inclusive development of all sections of society - and where does the Indian Mineral Industry stand today. According to the Press Information Bureau, 218 mines of Coal India Limited (CIL) are operating in violation to the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Notification 2006. These are pre-1994 mines when the EIA notification was not in place. These mines never applied for clearance and are operating on renewal of lease basis. Ninety one of these mines belong to Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL), 103 to Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), 20 to Central Coalfields Limited (CCL) and 4 mines to Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL).
Bharat Aluminium Company (BALCO) is planning to set up a 4 Million Tonnes per Annum (MTPA) coal mining project and a 650 Tonnes per Hour (TPH) coal washery in Taraimar Coal Block in Mand Raigarh coal field.

We were standing between a massive mine and a stunning water reservoir. Local activists were explaining to me that this iron ore mine was located in the catchment of the Salaulim water reservoir, the only water source for south Goa. Suddenly, as I started clicking with my camera, we were surrounded by a jeepload of men. They said they were from the mine management and wanted us off the property. We explained that we had come on a public path and that there were no signs to indicate that we were trespassing. But they were not in a mood to listen.
