While Indian industry has made efforts to set up systems for managing its hazardous wastes, the management of non-hazardous industrial waste has lagged behind, largely on account of a lack of generation-related data and quantification. As global economies transition towards circularity, it is important to allot more attention to this waste stream – a baseline resource needs to be created which can assist policymakers, regulatory bodies and industries in better understanding and managing it at both national and state levels.
Based on a study that it has recently conducted, Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) has developed a practical toolkit to help inventorise and estimate the generation of such non-hazardous wastes across various industrial sectors. The toolkit employs a material flow approach, utilising production and input data to identify and estimate non-hazardous industrial waste generation within these sectors.
CSE, in association with the Madhya Pradesh Pollution Control Board, will be sharing the findings of its study and launching this toolkit at a workshop in Bhopal. The workshop will focus on the challenges and opportunities, share good practices, and discuss the way forward.
