India’s growth in renewable energy in keeping with the 500 GW target is transforming the power grid. Coal-based thermal power plants, which continue to be the bedrock of the power supply ecosystem, ought to shift from consistent baseload to becoming more flexible resources to accommodate increasing RE generation during daytime, and ramp up to meet the rising evening demand.
Realizing this transition requires addressing the technical and regulatory barriers to coal flexibilisation, while re-examining their power purchase agreements (PPAs) to support transition risks without compromising grid reliability or imposing undue costs on consumers.
Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) is organizing a national dialogue to discuss pathways around these pressing issues. Two new policy reports will be released on the occasion to guide the discussion. The event is expected to bring together policy regulators, sectoral experts, and stakeholders from industry and civil society, with an aim to support the policy ecosystem towards power sector flexibility while ensuring energy security.
